A root canal, technically known as endodontic therapy, is a dental procedure designed to treat infection at the center of a tooth.
This area, known as the pulp, contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When the pulp becomes infected or inflamed due to deep decay, cracks, or trauma, it can cause severe pain and lead to abscess formation if left untreated.
We understand that dental anxiety is common, which is why we’re here to guide you through every step. If you’re scheduled for a root canal, here’s what you can typically expect throughout the process.
Before starting the procedure, your dentist will numb the affected area to ensure your comfort. They will then place a rubber dam around the tooth to keep it dry and free from saliva during the treatment.
To reach the infected pulp, your dentist will create a small access hole in the tooth’s crown. This allows them to remove the damaged pulp tissue and clean out the root canals.
Using specialized instruments, the dentist will carefully clean and shape the inside of the root canals to remove any remaining bacteria and debris. They may also irrigate the canals with antibacterial solutions to ensure thorough disinfection.
Once the canals are clean and dry, they are filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha. This material seals the canals to prevent re-infection and provides structural support to the tooth.
After the root canal is completed, the tooth is usually restored with a filling or a crown to protect it and restore its function and appearance. In some cases, a temporary filling may be placed until a permanent restoration can be made.
A root canal procedure becomes necessary when the pulp, the soft tissue inside the tooth, becomes infected or inflamed. This can happen due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, a crack or chip in the tooth, or trauma to the tooth.
Severe tooth pain, especially when chewing or applying pressure, can indicate that the pulp is inflamed or infected. The pain may be constant or intermittent but often worsens over time.
Sensitivity to hot or cold foods and beverages that lingers even after the stimulus is removed can signal nerve damage or infection within the tooth.
Swelling and tenderness in the gums near the affected tooth may indicate an infection spreading beyond the tooth.
A tooth that has darkened in color compared to surrounding teeth may be experiencing internal damage or decay that requires treatment.
Touching or pressing on the tooth may cause pain or discomfort that lasts for a prolonged period, indicating nerve or pulp damage.
A pimple-like bump on the gums near the tooth, accompanied by pain and possibly drainage of pus, signifies an abscess — an infection that has spread beyond the roots of the tooth.
